You might have noticed a post go missing from this blog recently

Well… for the first time in our 2 year history interns anonymous has been threatened with legal action!

We have taken the offending blog down  for the good of the intern… who was also threatened.  Threatened by the Global Director of Comms no less.

This is all we are going to say at this stage.

The company concerned should appreciate the intern’s feedback, and their HR departments, not their comms or legal departments, should be acting positively on it.

There has to be a better way of responding than intimidation.

I don’t know how old the post was, that you removed, but depending on which type of claim, it might not be actionable if it is older than 1 year.

Well..isn’t it great that companies are able to silence interns by threatening them with legal action and legal jargon. A lot of important information will be kept hidden from the public which could save many new interns, who try to avoid certain things, from disaster.

I absolutely agree with Bridget on acting positively on it. That is absolutely the way to go forward these days, instead of censoring it.

Has the company every apologised or acknowledged the intern’s experiences?

How can any company actually improve by ignoring bad experiences? Are these companies not capable of having a sensible dialog? Every negative experience you can get your hands on is valuable information for your business (if you take your business serious). Some companies thrive by turning negative experiences into a positive one for that person. Turning an enemy into a friend so to speak. Now that is what I call a positive mental attitude :)

I suspect I know the one which was taken down, I was going to comment on it too on how accurate it depits our (as in the 2009 graduating crowd) situation! I think it depresses me even more that not only do we have to jump from one internship to another, but this person is threatened to keep silenced, as is the blog.

Talk about freedom of the pen…
